Two-time Dell Technologies Match Play winner Jason Day wins Farmers Insurance Open
AUSTIN, Texas – Jason Day, the 2014 and 2016 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play champion, outlasted Alex Noren with a birdie on the sixth playoff hole for his 11th career PGA TOUR title at the Farmers Insurance Open. The victory is Day’s first since THE PLAYERS 2016, moving him up to ninth in the current FedExCup standings.
In 2016, the first year the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play was held at Austin Country Club, Day outlasted Rory McIlroy in an epic semifinal match before cruising to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking with a 5 and 4 victory over Louis Oosthuizen in the Championship Match for his second WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play title. Day’s first came at the 2014 event, where he fought off Victor Dubuisson in a historic 23-hole match that remains the longest Championship Match in tournament history.
Tiger Woods, the 2003, 2004 and 2008 winner of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, made his first start in an official PGA TOUR event in a year with a T23 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. Woods posted rounds of 72-71-70-72—285(-3) for his first top-25 since the 2015 Wyndham Championship after dealing with back injuries the last two seasons. Woods, along with Day and Geoff Ogilvy, are the only players in tournament history with multiple victories at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.
With only seven events remaining on the PGA TOUR schedule before the field is set for the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, three players – Keegan Bradley, Charles Howell III, and Alexander Levy – moved inside the top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Bradley jumped from No. 73 to No. 64 with a solo-fifth finish and Howell III moved from 66th to 62nd with a T6 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open, while Alexander Levy moved up seven spots to No. 60 with a solo-fourth finish at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Ryan Moore, Bill Haas, and Shane Lowry each fell outside of the top 64 this week.

The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is one of the most elite and exciting tournaments on golf’s calendar as one in a series of four World Golf Championships events sanctioned and organized by the operational committee of the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA TOUR, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour. The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play field annually consists of the very best players from around the world from all Tours and traditionally features nearly all of the top 64 in the world.
Since its inception, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play has generated more than $17 million for charity with the tournament announcing in early October that the 2017 edition raised over $1.1 million for five Austin-based charities.
