Reigning FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy adds name to the field for WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

AUSTIN, Texas – World No. 3 Rory McIlroy has added his name to the field for the 2023 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, returning to Austin Country Club, March 22-26. The 23-time PGA TOUR winner joins World No. 1 Jon Rahm and World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler as early commitments to the PGA TOUR’s match play event.

“Always good to come back to a tournament where you’ve won and had success before,” McIlroy said in 2021. “It’s a sprint. It’s 18 holes. You don’t really have time to find your rhythm. You need to try to make birdies from the get-go. And that’s the approach I’ve adopted the last few years and I feel like my match play record for the most part speaks for itself. I’ve had a pretty good record since I’ve turned pro in this tournament and in the Ryder Cup as well.”

In 12 prior appearances at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, McIlroy has advanced to at least the Semifinals three time including a win in 2015 when he defeated Gary Woodland, 4 and 2, in the Championship Match at TPC Harding Park. His best finish at Austin Country Club came in his bid to defend his title in 2016 where he finished fourth after losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Jason Day. Since his last appearance at ACC in 2021, McIlroy has gone on to add five additional wins to his overall career record.

The 2022 FedExCup champion started off the 2022-23 season by successfully defending his title at THE CJ CUP in South Carolina in his season debut, becoming the 28th player in PGA TOUR history to reach 23 career wins on TOUR and became the second reigning FedExCup champ to win his season debut since Tiger Woods in 2008.

In addition to his 2015 Dell Technologies Match Play win, McIlroy has two additional World Golf Championships victories to his credit including the 2015 World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions, where he defeated Xander Schauffele with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
